On Weirdness and Hardware Communities

Weirdness is beautiful.

Here are some of my favorite weird-ass projects on Hackster.

Later in the video, we also go into the theory of building a community of weirdos, and how to coexist peacefully, constructively, and delightfully.

First, our list of weird and awesome projects on Hackster:

Featuring… a magnetic zipper monitor!

A creepy animatronic Sauron!

A floating, talking, disquieting virtual head!

A robot that’s designed to go up and down a single set of stairs, forever!

A cake that screams!!!

Robotics, taxidermy, and 3D printing all in one glorious project!

We segue into this article about supportive critique and communication, featuring two very different skills developed at hackerspaces.

And how these values are laid out in our Code of Conduct.

Why does it matter whether we support one another’s weirdnesses? We delved into this a bit in our interview with Mitch, some months ago. It’s always worth revisiting what he has to say. In particular, we talked about the fact that many nerds and makers have felt alienated by their interests, or otherwise struggled socially. Now that we have a strong and growing community, we must foster it with compassion.

Thanks for reading.
